Nine Days Of Excellence

Writer’s note: 1500 hrs – Jamaica just got silver in the women’s 4x400m. So add one more to the tally in the article.

With today being the final day in what is without a doubt Jamaica’s best performance and medal tally in the history of our international competition, I take a quick look at our 9 days of excellence.

Whatever the outcome today in the women’s 4x400m relay final, Jamaica has already created World Athletics Championship history.

Doing a bit of research, I found out that our first ever medal came in 1983 at the games held in Helsinki, Finland. Bert Cameron secured gold in the men’s 400m. We then had the benefit of the ever performing, ever consistent and impressive Merlene Ottey, who got gold medals in the 200m in both 1993 and 1995.

Jamaica Brings Home More Gold From Berlin

It would appear that my lovely island Jamaica went on a mining mission in Berlin, Germany.

In another show of Jamaica’s sprint supremacy that has come to define these championships our 4x100m Women’s relay team was in full form. With our 100m champion Simone Facey starting us off with a very big lead before her hand-off to second leg Shelly-Ann Fraser who made sure that the lead was maintained for Aleen Bailey and 100m silver medallist Kerron Stewart and extended significantly before reaching the line in 42.06 to claim gold.

IAAF World Championship – Bolt Again!

All Jamaica is now in a frenzy from the results of the IAAF Men’s 100m finals. Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt set a new world record as he cruised to a stunning victory in the 100m at the World Championships in Berlin.

Bolt claimed victory in a world record time of 9.58 seconds, faster than his winning gold medal time at the 2006 Beijing Olympics.

Current world champion Tyson Gay, who was mouthing off about showing Bolt who will be world champion, and that he’s ready for the challenge, came second in a time of 9.71, with Jamaica’s Asafa Powell claiming bronze in 9.84.

Now I know that all those world records that Usain Bolt now hold, can and will only be broken again by him or another Jamaican. We rule those events and the world should accept that.

Usain Bolt, you continue to make your country proud. Keep going young man and all the best.
